Raku is an ancient ceramic technique where the pieces are placed directly into a fire and the smoke blackens the unglazed clay surface. This process is quite violent for the clay and produces a whimsical texture allowing us to see the stress points for the clay body. Much like the workings inside Earth we can see striations and how the rock faces begin to stress and crack.

There is a story about the natural texture in these Raindrop Pieces. To create the rich smoke these pieces are placed directly into the fire pit and then smoked in straw or leaves until they have reached the desired depth of color. On this particular firing it began to rain. Dawson imediately saw how the beautiful random raindrop patters compliment these organic forms. She then stood out in the rain and completed the entire firing process taking great care to protect the subtle rain drop texture.
